What is general skilled migration?
The General Skilled Migration program is for skilled individuals or families looking to permanently migrate to Australia, to fill Australia’s skill shortages. Visas within the General Skilled Migration program are points tested and are either independent, State / Territory sponsored or family-sponsored permanent visas.General Skilled Migration consists of three pathways:

General Skilled Migration Skill Assessment
With General Skilled Migration, it's quite it's quite involved and the most important part is having your skills assessed for the your occupation. If you're applying under the 189 independent your occupation must be on the medium long term list and if you're on the 190 or 491 you've got a little bit more flexibility depending on which state or territory are sponsoring you as to what occupations they have on their list. There's a broad range of occupations so there's a broad range of assessing authorities but generally speaking they want to see qualifications, academic transcripts, work references, work experience and in certain professions such as teaching and engineering they also require a minimum English level as part of the process. If you don't pass a skills assessment for your qualifications then you can't apply for any of the general skilled migration. The skill assessment is valid for three years and the process of securing the skills assessment is quite in-depth. It takes a lot of a lot of work and a lot of research and it's really important to get it correct the first time.189 General Skilled Migration
The 189 Visa is a points-tested permanent visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an Australian employer, family member or nominated by a state or territory. Applicants must obtain a minimum of 65 points on the point assessment to be eligible to apply for the Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189). To apply for this visa, an applicant must submit an expression of interest (EOI) and be invited by SkillSelect. Upon receiving an invitation to apply for this visa, you have 60 days to submit your application. Once the Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) Visa has been granted, the visa holder and accompanying family members are are able to live, work and study in Australia as permanent residents. The General Skilled Migration 189 visa is also classed as independent skilled migration 189. The 189 visa for Australia is based upon a number of key factors such as:- Occupation on MLTSSL

Eligibility for General Skilled Migration to Australia
- Points: you are required to score a minimum of 65 points on the Immigration Points Calculator
- Age - you must be under 45 years of age when you apply. This is the age at when you receive an invitation to apply and not the age at which you start the application
- English language – you should have sufficient ability in the English language to work in Australia
- Qualifications – you must have a positive skill assessment
- Nominated occupation - Your nominated occupation must be on the MLTSSL or the STSOL in demand lists.
- Health – you must undergo a medical assessment, and show that you are in reasonably good health.
- Character – you must usually pass a criminal record check (minor offenses are generally ok)

General Skilled Migration 190 Visa
The General Skilled Migration ("GSM") 190 Visa is a State Nominated Permanent Residency Visa. Holders of the Australian 190 Visa are required to live and work in the sponsoring state for two years. After this time 190 visa holders are free to live and work anywhere in Australia. The Skilled Nominated Visa is a points-tested permanent visa for skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian State or Territory government. Applicants must obtain a minimum of 65 points on a points assessment to be eligible to apply for a Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) and must be nominated by a participating State or Territory government in Australia. The General Skilled Migration 190 visa is also classed as independent skilled migration 190. The 190 visa for Australia is based upon a number of key factors such as:
- Occupation on the MLTSSL
- Or an occupation on the STSOL
- Work experience
- Age
- Education

190 Family Sponsored Visa
General Skilled Migration to Australia does have a family element to the 190 visa subclass so if an applicant has family in a nominating state it will generate extra points. Sponsoring family members must be:- Australian Citizens
- Permanent residents with over two years Australian Residency
- Parents
- Siblings
- Aunts or Uncles
Difference between 189 and 190 visa
The Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) allows you to claim an additional 5 points due to State or Territory Nomination, it also requires the visa applicants to reside for a period of time in the nominated state subsequent to the grant of the visa. Additionally, subclass 190 may also require applicants to provide evidence of sufficient funds for settlement, which may vary between each State and Territory. The Independent Skilled Visa 189 does not contain such requirements.General Skilled 491 Visa
The Skilled Regional Visa is designed to encourage skilled workers to live and work is specified regional parts of Australia for up to five years. Applicants must be sponsored by an Australian relative who is living in a designated area, or by a State or Territory government. The 491 GSM visa is classed as provisional only because it allows the visa holder an opportunity to apply for permanent residency if they’re able to meet certain requirements. The 491 visa duration is 5 years although the visa applicant has the ability to apply for the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) Subclass 191 visa, providing certain conditions are met.491 Visa Requirement

191 Visa Requirement
The General Skilled Migration 191 Visa is a pathway to Permanent Residency for 491 visa holders if they meet the following criteria:- Have resided in a designated regional area for at least 3 years
- Have the ability to evidence taxable income for at least 3 years at or above a specific income threshold
- Comply with the original visa conditions under the initial Subclass 491 visa
