AITSL provides national leadership for the Australian State and Territories in promoting excellence in the profession of teaching and school leadership. The AITSL is the Skill Assessment authority for the following occupations:
- Early Childhood Teacher (ANZSCO 241111)
- Primary School Teacher (ANZSCO 241213)
- Middle School Teacher (ANZSCO 241311)
- Secondary School Teacher (ANZSCO 241411)
- Special Needs Teacher (ANZSCO 241511)
- Teacher of the Hearing Impaired (ANZSCO 241512)
- Teacher of the Sight Impaired (ANZSCO 241513)
- Special Education Teachers (nec) (ANZSCO 241599)
AITSL can assess teachers who match the following criteria:
- qualification completed in any country
- experience closely related to your nominated school teacher occupation
- experience undertaken within the past 10 years
- work experience undertaken after the completion of four years of higher education study (including completion of a recognized teacher qualification)
- experience undertaken for at least four consecutive weeks and at least 20 hours per week
- experience undertaken within a registered school setting or early childhood setting
- paid employment
An AITSL Skill Assessment is designed to examine the following criteria. The Australian Institute of Teaching & School Leadership are tasked with ensuring the new skilled migrants to Australia hold the equivalent level of qualification, skills and experience as that of an Australian qualified teaching professional.

- Educational
- Professional
- English requirement
- Supervised teaching practice
AITSl Education Requirement
Qualifications must be comparable to at least four years full-time (or part-time equivalent) higher education (university) level study in Australia.
Teaching qualifications acceptable to Australia include:
- 4 year teaching degree
- 3 year undergraduate degree + 1 year postgraduate teaching qualification i.e. PGCE
- These are the only qualifications acceptable
Teaching qualifications Not acceptable to Australia include:
- 3 year degree
- TEAFL
- Work based qualifcations
- SCITT
- GTP
- Diploma
Professional requirements for AITSL
At least one year of postgraduate teaching is preferred. This is evidences through professional referencing.
English requirements for Australian Institute of Teaching & School Leadership
To meet the English requirements for your AITSL skills assessment you will need to have taken the Academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and meet minimum score for each component as follows:
- Minimum of 7.0 for reading
- Minimum of 7.0 for writing
- Minimum of 8.0 for speaking
- Minimum of 8.0 for listening
English test exemption for AITSL
An applicant is exempt from the Australian Institute of Teaching & School Leadership English requirement if they have completed at least four full years of University study in one of the following countries:
- Australia
- Canada
- Republic of Ireland
- New Zealand
- United Kingdom
- United States of America
Supervised teaching practice AITSL
Evidence of a minimum 45 days supervised teaching practice is mandatory for the AITSL. This evidence must be provided via an official document from the university awarding the initial teacher education qualification that adheres to the following criteria:
- be on official university letterhead
- signed and dated by a university representative
- details the duration of the supervised teaching practice
- states the age range of the student taught
If a teacher is applying to the Australian Institute of Teaching & School Leadership as a Secondary teacher then the majority of supervised teaching practice must have been completed in a secondary setting. The same rules apply for primary and middle school teachers. The weight of supervised teaching practice must be in the same age range as the teaching ANZSCO code being applied for.
